Stick your Olympic golds up your hole. We got the big one. David O’Doherty won the biggest prize at the Edinburgh Fringe last night, that award that used to be called the Perrier. Dave became the fifth Irishman to take the award following in the footsteps of Tommy Tiernan, Dylan Moran, Sean Hughes and Ben Keaton.
Dave was presented the award by last years winner Brendon Burns who probably had a good reason for being dressed like a twat but when you see a short clip he just looks like … well, a twat.
The best newcomer award went to Sarah Millican who performed a show based on her experience of going through a bitter divorce. In accepting her award she conceded she probably owed a debt to her ex husband in winning but said she still wasn’t going to thank him. In accepting his award Dave made a speech about some things that clearly weren’t as funny as his show which he described as an hour of “stupid jokes and songs played on a keyboard I got for my 11th birthday”.
