Colin Murphy

Colin Murphy is the premier Northern Irish comedian working today. His distinct fusion of edgy ‘in your face’ topical satire, with acute observational material, make him a highly original and much sought after performer.
As regular MC at Belfast’s infamous ‘Empire’ comedy club, Colin has deservedly earned himself a reputation as a force to be reckoned with. Always armed with a razor sharp wit, his turn over of material is nothing short of prolific.

As a formally trained actor, and founder member of the ‘Sightlines’ Theatre Company, Colin has appeared in countless theatre productions including ‘Twelfth Night’ (as Sir Toby Belch) and as Gottleib in ‘Auschwitz’; the latter part earning him a nomination for ‘Best Actor’ at the ISDA awards.

However it is his barn storming comedy routines which have brought him directly into the public eye, including a sell-out breathtaking runs at the 1999- 2005 Edinburgh Festivals – earning him huge critical and industry acclaim. Internationally, Colin has headlined shows in New York, Boston, Singapore, Hong Kong, Brussels – and two Just for Laughs Comedy Festivals in Montreal.

With a growing broadcast media profile, Colin hosted the RTE entertainment shows, ‘The Blizzard of Odd’ (5 series), Xitfile (2 series) and XitPoll (RTE 1) – and the 12 part comedy music series for BBC N.I.: Elvis has Left the Building (2 series). Colin is currently guest starring in the 4th series of the acclaimed RTE series ‘The Panel’ and is also starring on both the radio and TV series of The Blame Game – for BBC NI, in addition to previously hosting The Unbelievable Truth and Badads, both for BBC NI. In a departure, Colin will be seen fronting the moving documentary series ‘The Children’s Storybook’ for RTE in 2007, following the story of two girls with AIDS in Uganda. He has featured in an array of programmes including the BBC series ‘People Like Us’ (2 episodes); his own solo comedy specials ‘Really, Really’ (UTV) and ‘Something For The Weekend’ BBC NI (both, a mixture of stand up, sketches and comedy chat); ‘Comedy Nation’ ‘Comic Asides; ‘The Stand Up Show’ (2 series) all for the BBC, ‘The Survival Guide to Life’ for UTV. ‘@last TV’ for RTE; ‘Don’t Shoot the Messenger’ for the Paramount Channel, and ‘The Return of the Empire’ for BBC NI. Colin has also filmed 2 headlining slots for the C5 series ‘All New Comedy Store’.

As an actor, Colin can be seen co-starring in the Scala feature film ‘Divorcing Jack’ as ‘Gibber McGibbet’; the feature film ‘The Most fertile Man in Ireland’, ITV’s ‘Big Bad World, the BBC NI comedy series ‘I Fought the Law’ and the BBC drama series ‘Eureka Street’ and ‘Red and Blue’.

Colin was specifically commissioned to write a short story (Red Isuzu) for the book, ‘Shenanigans’(an Anthology of Fresh Irish Writing) – which is published by Sceptre. He was also one of the lead writers for 2 series of The Stand up Show, co-wrote and starred in radio 4’s The O’Show – and is currently adapting a Hollywood script for a major US film company .
